PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Sam Pallin, MD
Don’t try to tell me it’s warm. It’s hot! You think summer in
Arizona is miserable? Try living on a generator in a fifth wheel
trailer on the Tonopah desert while the County drags its heels
producing a building permit. We just returned from a delightful
week in the Mount Baldy Wilderness. The July AFTA ride was a
combined ride with the Lone Rangers Club. From time to time I
hear concerns about our equines in various challenging
conditions.
Myth number one: “my horse is miserable in the heat.” Our
equines sport an incredibly dense surface capillary system and they
adjust to heat and cold much better than we humans. Ever notice how
they eschew that fancy shade structure and sun themselves in the heat
of the day?
Myth number two: “my horse needs time to adjust when we drag him
from sea level to 9,000 foot altitude.” Sure, if the horse is going
to compete or race at high altitude he needs to train at altitude. But
those of us who trailer from Phoenix to the Rim Country regularly in
the Summer can attest to their wonderful adaptability. Our horses
climb the steep and negotiate the obstacles without hesitation. No
hint that they are short of breath like us. No sign of fatigue or
altitude sickness. Don’t you wish you were a horse?
